    Nature-based solutions to global challenges

    Nature-based solutions to global challenges

Professor Nathalie Seddon, Founding Director of the Nature-Based Solutions Initiative at the University of Oxford, explains biodiversity, how its decline is an existential risk on the scale of climate change, and outlines how nature-based approaches could present a key part of the solution.
    • Biodiversity, or biological diversity, is in steep decline, driven by land-use change, over-exploitation and climate change.
    • The negative impact of biodiversity loss could be very large, presenting substantial risks for companies and the global economy, and undermining human health, wealth and wellbeing.
    • Biodiversity loss and the associated risks can be reduced, with opportunities also available to support recovery and returns as well as preventing losses.

How investors can have a positive impact on biodiversity – Insight’s David McNeil

    • There are growing opportunities for investors to have a positive impact on biodiversity, with broad dependencies across global supply chains on ecosystem services, which rely heavily on biodiversity.
    • There is much work to be done to support investors’ decisions in this area, but we expect the research base and opportunities for investors to grow.
    • Approaches available to investors today include fixed income investments linked to biodiversity targets and blended finance focused on specific projects.
